Japan’s largest Power company JERA, Sets Up Renewables Headquarters in London
Japan’s largest power company, JERA, has chosen London as the global headquarters for its brand new renewable energy business, JERA Nex. This move is seen as a significant vote of confidence in the UK’s booming renewable energy sector.
JERA Nex will focus on developing, owning, and operating renewable energy projects across the globe, including offshore and onshore wind, solar power, and battery storage.
JERA has been actively expanding its renewable energy portfolio globally, with notable acquisitions such as Parkwind, Belgium’s largest offshore wind platform, in July 2023.
JERA Nex inherits the majority of operational assets and development pipelines totaling 10GW from JERA, consolidating them to create a center of excellence in renewables.
Yukio Kani, Global CEO and Chair of JERA, emphasized the significance of JERA Nex: “We have outlined a vision to reach zero emissions by 2050, and the birth of JERA Nex plays a critical role in our strategic pillars for delivering that ambition. JERA Nex will enable us to draw upon expertise from across the world to develop renewable projects, forge partnerships, and build assets that contribute to a future of decarbonized energy with sustainability, affordability, and stability.”
The UK’s established leadership in renewable energy development and financing played a key role in JERA’s decision. JERA Nex aims to leverage the UK’s expertise and talent pool to expand its global reach and capabilities.
JERA’s commitment to the UK is a major vote of confidence for the country’s burgeoning renewable energy sector. This decision comes at a time when the UK has seen significant growth in renewable energy, with nearly half of its electricity now generated from clean sources.
Nathalie Oosterlinck, JERA’s current Head of Global Renewables, will lead JERA Nex as CEO. With a team of over 300 renewable energy specialists across its global headquarters in London and centers of excellence in Belgium, Taiwan, the US, and Japan, JERA Nex is well-positioned to become a major player in the global renewable energy landscape.
