Vestas Secures Conditional Agreement for Nordlicht Offshore Wind Projects with Vattenfall and BASF

20 June 2024Vestas, has announced a significant milestone with a conditional agreement to supply 112 V236-15.0 MW wind turbines for the Nordlicht 1 and 2 offshore wind projects. These projects, a collaboration between Vattenfall and BASF, are set to be developed in the German North Sea.

The contract includes a 5-year service and warranty agreement, followed by an operational support agreement extending up to 30 years. This comprehensive deal underscores the commitment of all parties to long-term sustainability and operational excellence.

Vestas, Vattenfall, and BASF are also dedicated to reducing CO2 emissions throughout the value chain. Notably, 56 of the 112 turbine towers will incorporate low-emission steel, resulting in a 16 percent reduction in the overall carbon footprint of the towers. This steel is manufactured using 100 percent recycled steel scrap melted in an electric arc furnace powered entirely by wind energy, reducing the carbon footprint by 66 percent compared to traditional steelmaking processes.

Nils de Baar, President of Vestas Northern and Central Europe, stated: “We are pleased to have signed this conditional agreement to deliver our state-of-the-art V236-15.0 MW offshore wind turbine for the Nordlicht projects. Vattenfall, BASF, and Vestas share the ambition to rapidly expand wind projects and to decarbonize the energy market in Europe. Nordlicht will play a crucial role in delivering Germany’s energy transition targets.”

Catrin Jung, Head of Offshore Wind at Vattenfall, commented: “Wind energy is an essential cornerstone on the path to fossil freedom. With Vestas, we have a partner who shares our values in sustainable energy solutions. The wind turbine supply and service contracts are an important milestone for us.”

Horatio Evers, Managing Director at BASF Renewable Energy GmbH, added: “Renewable energies are key to achieving net-zero CO2 emissions. This agreement is a crucial milestone in the Nordlicht 1 and 2 offshore wind projects and shows our commitment to the European wind power supply chain. By using low-emission steel, we demonstrate that sustainable products are the future.”

The Nordlicht wind farm area, located 85 kilometers north of Borkum in the German North Sea, consists of two separate locations: Nordlicht 1 and Nordlicht 2. Upon completion, these wind farms are expected to generate approximately 6 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity annually, enough to power 1.6 million German households.

Construction of Nordlicht 1 and 2 is scheduled to begin in 2026. The installation of wind turbines is planned for 2027 (Nordlicht 1) and 2028 (Nordlicht 2), with full operational status expected by 2028.

Vestas will disclose further details if the conditional agreement transitions to firm and unconditional orders, adhering to its disclosure policy.
