Maersk Secures Heavy Lift Contract from Vestas for World’s Largest Wind Turbine Powertrains

June 20, 2024Maersk, renowned for its integrated logistics solutions, has been awarded a significant contract by Danish renewable energy leader, Vestas. This contract involves transporting the massive powertrains for Vestas’s largest wind turbine, the V236, as part of Maersk’s Project Logistics (MPL) division’s heavy lift capabilities.

The V236 turbine’s powertrain, a critical component weighing 260 tons, will be installed in the nacelle at Vestas’s factory in Lindø, Denmark. Maersk will handle the intricate logistics of moving these enormous components from Lommel, Belgium, via Antwerp, to the port of Lindø. The complete V236 nacelle, inclusive of the powertrain, has a total weight exceeding 630 tons.

In addition to the transport to Denmark, Maersk will eventually move the V236 powertrains to a new Vestas factory in Poland. The company is crafting a comprehensive supply chain solution for inbound manufacturing cargo to both the Danish and Polish production sites. This integrated logistics solution encompasses heavy lift transport, containerized cargo, air freight, customs services, intermodal transport, and warehousing.

Damien Lhors, Group Senior Vice President of Global Supply Chain and Transport at Vestas, emphasized the strategic value of this partnership. “Since our cooperation started, Maersk has proven to be a very capable and optimal partner who can serve a lot of our logistics needs globally out of one hand. An integrated supply chain solution which is being designed and built together with a strategic partner adds visibility and thus resilience to our logistics operations as well as a lot of ease while executing our complex logistics business.”

Claus Svane Schmidt, Global Head of Maersk Project Logistics, echoed these sentiments, expressing pride in the partnership and the trust Vestas has placed in Maersk. “The transport requires complex logistics capabilities and experience, which makes us even more proud to be selected by the world’s leading renewable energy company.”
