Vineyard Wind 1 Becomes the Largest Operating Offshore Wind Project in the US

June 26, 2024ย  Vineyard Wind 1 has officially become the largest operating offshore wind project in the United States, delivering over 136 megawatts (MW) to the electric grid in Massachusetts. This milestone marks a significant achievement for the project, which is expected to become New England’s largest renewable energy facility once fully operational.

Vineyard Wind 1 currently has 10 turbines in operation, totaling approximately 136 MW, enough to power 64,000 homes and businesses in the Commonwealth. With a total capacity of 806 MW, Vineyard Wind 1 will be the largest renewable energy facility in New England, generating electricity for over 400,000 homes and businesses.

The project has created 937 union jobs through two years of construction, exceeding its initial commitment of 500 jobs. Vineyard Wind 1 is expected to reduce carbon emissions by over 1.6 million metric tons per year, equivalent to taking 325,000 cars off the road annually.

The project has installed 47 foundations and transition pieces and 21 wind turbines, with the installation of the 22nd turbine underway. Offshore wind is a critical energy resource in the Northeast region, capable of meeting the New England region’s winter peak demand and reducing carbon emissions.

“We’re proud of the progress we continue to make every day on the Vineyard Wind 1 project,” said Vineyard Wind CEO Klaus S. Moeller. “From creating clean energy jobs to supporting local communities, every passing milestone is another opportunity to build on our legacy and to fulfill the promise of our industry.”

Vineyard Wind is a leading developer of offshore wind in the United States, backed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), a global leader in green energy investment. The Vineyard Wind 1 project is located 15 miles off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard and is expected to be fully operational by mid-2024.
