Vestas Secures 155 MW Wind Turbine Order for Kaiwera Downs Wind Farm in New Zealand

June 26, 2024  –Vestas, has secured a 155 MW order for the second stage of Mercury Energy’s Kaiwera Downs wind farm in New Zealand. The order includes the supply and installation of 36 Vestas V136-4.2 MW turbines in 4.3 MW operating mode, along with a 30-year Active Output Management 5000 (AOM 5000) service and maintenance contract.

The project builds on the first stage of the Kaiwera Downs Wind Farm, also delivered by Vestas. Once operational, Kaiwera Downs stage one and two will become New Zealand’s second-largest wind farm, expected to create approximately 150 jobs during the peak of construction.

The order reflects Vestas’ continued expansion in New Zealand’s renewable energy market, contributing to the country’s decarbonisation ambitions. The project will add over 400 MW of renewables to New Zealand’s electricity mix, making it a significant contributor to the country’s clean energy goals.

“We are pleased to continue our partnership with Mercury Energy and contribute to New Zealand’s renewable energy growth,” said Danny Nielsen, Senior Vice President and Country Head of Vestas Australia & New Zealand.

“We look forward to working with Vestas and our other delivery partners to complete this project and add significant renewable energy capacity to New Zealand’s grid,” said Phil Gibson, Executive General Manager Portfolio at Mercury Energy.

Delivery of Vestas’ wind turbines is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025, with commissioning to commence in the first quarter of 2026.
